Seal Your Patio in 5 Easy Steps

As winter approaches, it’s important to seal your concrete patio. The sealant prevents moisture from ice or snow from seeping beneath the patio and growing mold or pushing your patio out of place. While this might seem like a daunting task, we’ve broken it down into 5 easy steps.

Find a high quality patio sealer

With different types of sealers, you have your pick of options. Choose from natural look, color boost, clear shine, or a wet look. If you choose a low quality seal, it could crack or peel once it’s dry, and you’ll end up with a patio that isn’t protected for winter. Use a high quality seal if you want it to last.

Prepare your materials

If you’re taking on this job solo, you’ll need easy access to switch between pouring the sealant and brushing it into place. Keep these tools handy so you can evenly spread the sealer before it dries.

Prepare the area

First, clean off the patio so you don’t seal in any extra dirt or debris. You can do this with a hose, broom, or power washer. Once the patio is clean it will be ready to seal.

Apply the patio sealer

Once you begin sealing your patio, you’ll need to spray on or pour the sealer. When you do this, use a brush to make sure it coats the patio evenly. Brush the sealant into all corners, moving from one side of the patio to the other. Do not step on the sealer as you are applying it–this could leave footprints. The entire patio should be coated in an even layer.

Let dry

This is an important part of the process! After you seal your patio, you need to let the sealer dry so it can create a seal. You also want to make sure you don’t step on the patio before it’s completely dry, since this could leave footprints or other marks on the concrete.
